SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Padres found temporary relief
following a frustrating weekend.
Ruben Rivera's RBI infield single in the eighth inning and Tyler
Houston's throwing error on the play helped the Padres rally for a
4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.
San Diego was coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the
lowly Pittsburgh Pirates. Those losses led to harsh words from
third baseman Phil Nevin to some teammates in remarks to the media.
The result was a clubhouse meeting before Monday's game.
"I think there is some frustration," Padres manager Bruce
Bochy said. "I think sometimes it's good to make some noise."
Nevin, who leads the team with 30 homers and 106 RBI, said not
all of his teammates "gave everything they had the last few
days" after Sunday's loss to the Pirates.
Nevin, who had a key double in the two-run eighth inning Monday,
was one of the more vocal participants of the pregame meeting.
"I felt something needed to be said, and it escalated into some
wild words, but it's over and done with," Nevin said.
It helped to get a break like the one San Diego received in the
eighth inning.
With Milwaukee leading 3-2, Nevin doubled off the right-field
scoreboard with one out in the eighth, chasing Brewers starter
Jamey Wright.
One out later, Ray King (1-2) walked Mike Darr, then allowed the
runners to advance on a wild pitch.
Rivera followed with a hard smash down the third-base line that
Houston backhanded. While Nevin scored the tying run, Houston threw
wildly to first, allowing Darr to score.
"To me it was a great play to come up with the ball," Houston
said. "Rivera's probably the fastest guy out there and you have to
get rid of the ball."
Said Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes: "He got aggressive. Those
things happen. If it happened again, he'd probably eat the ball."
Tom Davey (1-0), recalled from the minors before the game,
pitched a one-hit eighth, and Trevor Hoffman had a perfect ninth
for his 36th save in 43 chances.
Houston gave Milwaukee a 3-2 lead in the sixth with a three-run
homer off rookie Brian Tollberg, who blanked the Brewers on three
singles through five innings. Tollberg then issued two walks around
a pair of strikeouts before Houston's fly ball barely cleared the
right-field wall.
"You get a pitch to hit and you put a good swing on it,"
Houston said.
John Mabry hit an RBI single in the first and Damian Jackson had
an RBI double in the second for San Diego.
After Jackson singled in the fourth for his third hit of the
game, Wright retired 11 straight batters.
Game notes
Tollberg extended his scoreless innings streak against
Milwaukee to 12 innings before Houston's homer. He threw seven
shutout innings in his only other start against the Brewers, a 4-0
win at Milwaukee on Aug. 25. ... San Diego's Kevin Nicholson
fractured his left wrist during batting practice. The Padres are
unsure how long the infielder will be sidelined. ... Milwaukee OF
Marquis Grissom was ejected after he took a called third strike,
ending the seventh. Grissom, who went 0-for-4, slammed his helmet
down about 10 feet away from plate umpire Tim Tschida, who had his
back turned. When the helmet nearly hit Tschida, the ump turned
around, saw the helmet and tossed Grissom. ... Davey, a
right-hander, and LHP Dave Maurer were recalled from Triple-A Las
Vegas.
