GAME LOG
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Brewers never figured they would
need a ninth inning rally to beat the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday
night.
Third baseman Shane Andrews bobbled a slow grounder for an error
in the ninth inning and the Brewers, after blowing a seven-run
lead, beat the Cubs 9-8 Tuesday night.
"We had a 7-0 lead, then all of a sudden the lights went out,"
Brewers manager Davey lopes said after Milwaukee scored twice in
the ninth to edge the Cubs for the second straight game. "I
applaud the effort for coming back and winning the ballgame."
With one out in the ninth, Kyle Farnsworth (1-8) walked Jose
Hernandez. Pinch-runner James Mouton advanced to third on a single
by Ron Belliard and Raul Casanova walked.
Pinch-hitter Tyler Houston dribbled an infield single to tie it.
Marquis Grissom then hit a three-hopper that the charging Andrews
couldn't handle cleanly, and never made a throw as the winning run
scored.
"I screwed it up," Andrews said. "That's all I can say."
Chicago tied a season high with its seventh straight loss, but
it looked like the streak would end when they rallied with six runs
in the sixth, one in the seventh and one more in the eighth for an
8-7 lead.
Chad Meyer put the Cubs ahead with an RBI single off David
Weathers in the eighth. His bouncer off the mound rolled to
shortstop Mark Loretta who could not make a throw. Damon Buford, on
with a lead-off infield single, advanced on a sacrifice and ground
out before coming home on Meyers' hit.
Ray King (3-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief for the
win.
The Cubs lost for the 17th time in 19 games. The start of the
game was delayed for 70 minutes by rain. Milwaukee beat them 2-1
Monday night.
Pinch-hitter Roosevelt Brown hit a grand slam that highlighted a
six-run sixth for the Cubs.
Milwaukee starter Jimmy Haynes held the Cubs scoreless until two
outs in the sixth when Chicago scored six runs on three hits.
Haynes gave up an RBI single to Julio Zuleta and issued a
bases-loaded walk before Brown homered off Juan Acevedo.
Corey Patterson's solo home run -- his first major league hit --
off Brewers reliever Juan Acevedo made it 7-7 in the seventh.
"That game almost slipped away from us," Lopes said. "That
would have been a devastating loss."
Patterson started in place of Sammy Sosa, who missed his first
game since July 9, 1998. Sosa, who had played 388 straight game,
left Monday night with stiffness in his lower back.
Sosa was not in the locker room after the game. The Cubs said
that he had gone back to Chicago.
Geoff Jenkins' two-run homer, his 30th, in the second off
Chicago starter Ruben Quevedo was the record-setting 222nd allowed
by the Cubs.
Jeromy Burnitz scored on reliever Jamie Arnold's wild pitch in
the fifth for a 7-0 margin, but Haynes ran out of gas and the
Brewers' relievers failed to protect the lead.
Patterson's fielding error in the first helped the Brewers score
four runs.
With two on, Jenkins hit a high fly into the rain. Second
baseman Eric Young backed off and the ball fell in front of
Patterson in short center field and was ruled an error.
Patterson said that he should have made the play.
"Basically, I overran the ball," he said. "The weather
conditions were bad, but there's really no excuses."
Richie Sexson hit a RBI single, Quevedo walked in a run and
sacrifice flies by Hernandez and Casanova made it 4-0.
Game notes Sosa's consecutive games streak started at County Stadium.
... Sexson's single in the first snapped an 0-for-11 stretch. He
left with a stiff lower back after walking in the second. The
Brewers called it a precautionary move. ... Brown connected for his
first slam and first pinch-hit homer. It was the Cubs' first
pinch-hit slam since Glenallen Hill did it Aug. 20, 1998. ... The
Cubs allowed 221 home runs in 1999.
