Oilers lose captain indefinitely

Associated Press

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Doug Weight, the second-leading scorer for the Edmonton Oilers, was knocked out of Tuesday night's 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders with cracked ribs.

Weight, who has four goals and 21 assists in 31 games, left midway through the second period following a cross-check from New York's Gino Odjick as the Edmonton center drove to the net. A penalty was assessed but the play did not seem to be a violent hit.

The Oilers said that Weight, who assisted on Edmonton's first goal Tuesday, is out indefinitely. "It could be a week, four weeks, 10 weeks ... you never know with ribs," Oilers coach Kevin Lowe said. "I feel bad for Dougie. He's started to turn it on. It's a minor setback. Who knows how bad it is?"

Last season the Oilers captain missed 34 games because of a torn MCL in his right knee. He still managed a respectable season with six goals and 31 assists in 43 games.

Acquired from the New York Rangers on March 17, 1993, Weight has 138 goals and 372 assists in 578 career games. His best season was 1994-95, when he had 25 goals and 79 assists.
